McLENNAN Maisie Priscilla (nee Coghlan)

Maisie initially went to the area as a school teacher, then married and lived on Illawarra Farm, Borden.
Maisie led " a long, useful and very individual life" (Gnowangerup Star 1998)
Maisie spent her childhood in Fremantle, she learned the piano and became a teacher.
She was transferred to Borden. In those days there was a lot of friction between the different Christian religions and Maisie was told not long after she got off the train "We don't want you here, you are a Roman Catholic".
Maisie replied she had come to teach the Curriculum, not religion!

Maisie would have arrived at Salt River School in a cart or buggy.
When Maisie became ill she was transferred to Borden.
Joan Fox taught at Borden - her first year was in 1940 and it was then she met Maisie McLennan.
Maisie and "Joannie" became firm friends.
Maisie met Alec McLennan and they married on February 29, 1936.
Alec and Maisie bore two sons, Maurice and Michael.
Together Alec and Maisie farmed at "Illawarra" at Borden. The property was one of mixed farming - “wheat and sheep as well as 100's of chooks, ducks and turkeys.”
Maisie and Alec moved into Bethel Aged Care 1995 not long after it opened and both enjoyed their time there.
Their 60th Wedding Anniversary was a special occasion at Bethel with the then Mayor, Annette Knight paying a visit.
Maisie passed away in 1998; Alec in 1999.

Joan Fox wrote her eulogy in the Gnowangerup Star in 1998.
Joan remembered her as someone who was a great communicator, understood how to best help others, "strong in faith and charity", with a great memory, courageous and had a great sense of humour.”
